Choosing the right Doctor

The first health professional a person will consult in relation to anxiety symptoms is usually their general practitioner. Many GPs are now given additional training which enables them to better assist their patients with mental illnesses and disorders. As the prevalence of anxiety disorders increases, it's important people feel confident their GP will not only be able to diagnose their condition readily, but that they can provide the type of medical and emotional support their patients are seeking.

Seeing a doctor for an anxiety disorder can be quite different to seeing a doctor for a physical problem. Anxiety is not like having a broken leg in that there's not a clear-cut path to recovery. Many things can affect how well you cope, such as additional stress. Anxiety can be quite complex and some busy GPs may not be able to provide the time you feel you need to discuss your problem. If this is the case, ask for a referral to a mental health specialist.

It's important for people to be given an explanation about what's happening to them and why, rather than feeling as if they must do their own research. For most people, information contributes to their sense of control; a very important issue for people with an anxiety problem.
